Designed by Sound

For the CUPRA partnership with Amber Broos we developped a unique car wrap based on the sound of Amber’s new track ‘Arpegia’. Using Chladni technology to turn sound into a mindblowing design. Discover ‘Designed by Sound’, featuring the CUPRA Tavascan and Amber Broos.

Chladni plate

A Chladni plate is a metal plate that shows sound vibrations. When sprinkled with sand and vibrated using a bow or speaker, the sand moves to areas with no vibration (nodes), forming patterns called Chladni figures. It’s a simple way to visualize sound waves.

02

TouchDesigner

TouchDesigner is a visual programming tool for creating interactive graphics and audio-visual art. It can act like a digital Chladni plate by using audio input to generate patterns on the screen. Just like sand forms shapes on a vibrating plate, TouchDesigner can create visual patterns based on sound frequencies and amplitudes in real time.

03

Digital Chladni Plate

We transformed it into a digital Chladni plate in TouchDesigner by using audio input to drive visual patterns. The sound’s frequencies and amplitudes control shapes and movements on screen, simulating how sand forms patterns on a vibrating plate.

04

Designing The Wrap

We took the Chladni patterns generated in TouchDesigner and used them as the basis for a visual wrap design. By capturing still frames or exporting the patterns, we refined and stylized them in design software, turning the sound-based visuals into graphic elements. These were then arranged and adapted to fit the shape and flow of the wrap, blending digital sound art with physical design.
